Although thermal contact was suspected between the payload cooling conductor and the inner radiation shield in the EXC,
a feeler gauge measurement confirmed that the gap between the cooling conductor and the inner radiation shield was 0.05 mm.
(First photo)
We widened this gap to 2 mm by using the fully threaded bolt securing the 5N round bar (second photo) as a push bolt.
(Third photo)
The 2 mm gap was determined by referencing the clearance of the payload cooling conductor at the 180-degree opposite position.
In addition, some contacts were confirmed between the 6N aluminum sheet extending from the 5N round bar and the radiation shield.
(Fourth photo)
This was corrected by hand.
We suspect that the gaps between the payload cooling conductors and the inner radiation shield in other cryostats are similar,
but we believe that, in this case, the balance between assembly precision and thermal contraction happened to work out well, so it didn’t become an issue.
The correct answer will remain unknown until we open up the other cryostats; for now, this is purely speculation.
